Standards & Technical Requirements
Core NMI technical standards (R-series) that govern the design, testing, and approval of weighbridges and weighing instruments in Australia. All documents are published by the National Measurement Institute.
R-Series — Metrological & Technical Requirements
NMI R 76-1:2015 — Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (Part 1: Requirements)
The primary mandatory metrological and technical requirements for pattern approval of all non-automatic weighing instruments (NAWIs) in Australia, including weighbridges. Based on OIML R 76-1:2006. Defines accuracy classes (I, II, III, IIII), maximum permissible errors, environmental conditions, and test procedures. All Weigh-More Solutions weighbridges are approved under this standard.
NMI R 76-2:2015 — Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (Part 2: Test Report Format)
Specifies the test report format for non-automatic weighing instruments. Identical to OIML R 76-2:2007. Required when submitting verification test results to NMI. Used by servicing licensees when verifying weighbridges exceeding 3 t capacity.
NMI R 106 — Automatic Rail Weighbridges
Metrological and technical requirements, test procedures, and test report format for pattern approval of automatic rail weighbridges. Specifies requirements for instruments that determine the mass of rail vehicles or their loads while in motion or at rest.
Pattern Approval — General Information
NMI Pattern Approval — About & Application Process
Overview of the NMI pattern approval process: what it is, why it is required, how to apply, and what happens after submission. All measuring instruments used for trade in Australia must be pattern approved.
NMI Pattern Approval Requirements — Mandatory Instrument Standards
Lists all mandatory NMI R-series requirements that instruments must meet for pattern approval, organised by instrument category. Category 6 (weighing instruments) includes NMI R 76 for non-automatic weighing instruments and NMI R 106 for automatic rail weighbridges.
NMI Pattern Approval Fee Guide 2025–26
Current fee schedule for NMI pattern approval applications and services for 2025–26. Relevant for manufacturers and suppliers seeking approval for new weighbridge models or variations to existing certificates.
